How Dark Can Your Tint Legally Go? Ontario vs. Alberta Rules Explained

Quick note before we start: this post is general information to help you plan your tint job, not legal advice. Rules get enforced by officers on the road, and the exact call can come down to the specific vehicle and situation — when in doubt, confirm with your provider or the applicable provincial authority.

Tint is one of the most requested upgrades we install — and one of the most misunderstood when it comes to what’s actually legal. “As dark as possible” isn’t a starting point we can work from, because in both Ontario and Calgary, going too dark on the wrong window doesn’t just risk a ticket — it can mean the tint has to come back off.

Here’s what the rules actually say in each province.

Ontario: What’s Legal

  • Front windshield: No aftermarket tint permitted. Only factory-applied tint is allowed.
  • Front side windows (driver and front passenger): Must allow at least 70% of light through (in other words, no more than 30% light blockage).
  • Rear side windows and rear windshield: No VLT restriction — darker tint is allowed here.
  • Reflective/mirrored tint: Not permitted anywhere on the vehicle.
  • If you tint the rear windshield: Both exterior side mirrors need to be in working order, since you’re relying on them instead of the rear window.

Calgary (Alberta): What’s Legal

Alberta’s rule is stricter on the front of the vehicle than Ontario’s:

  • Front windshield and front side windows: No aftermarket tint film permitted at all — not a percentage limit, an outright restriction on covering that glass with film.
  • Rear side windows and rear windshield: No restriction — darker tint is allowed here.
  • Reflective/mirrored tint: Not permitted.

Why This Trips People Up

The most common mix-up we see: assuming Ontario and Alberta follow the same rule, or assuming a percentage-based limit applies everywhere. Ontario allows front side window tint as long as it stays at or above 70% VLT. Alberta doesn’t have a percentage option for the front windshield or front side windows at all — aftermarket film isn’t permitted on that glass, period, regardless of how light it is.

Rear glass is where both provinces relax the rules. If what you’re really after is privacy or heat reduction in the back seat, that’s where you have the most room to work with in either province.

What Clients Ask Before They Book

Can I get my windshield tinted for sun glare? Not with aftermarket film, in either province — factory tint is the only tint permitted on the windshield. If glare is the issue, ask your Glass Expert about other options for cutting heat and glare on the rest of the vehicle instead.

I’m driving between Ontario and Alberta — which rule applies? Generally, the rule of the province you’re currently driving in. If your tint is legal in one province but not the other, that’s worth knowing before a road trip, not after a roadside stop.

Will All-Brite install tint darker than what’s legal if I ask for it? No. Our Glass Experts install to what’s legal for your vehicle and province — not just what’s technically available. That protects you from fines and from having to pay to have it removed.

What happens if my tint doesn’t meet the limit? Enforcement varies, but in Ontario it can mean a fine and a fix-it order requiring the tint to be brought back into compliance. Rules and penalties are set by each province, so treat any dollar figures as a general guide, not a guarantee of what you’d actually be charged.

What film do you use? We install XPEL film — not generic aftermarket tint — matched to what’s legal for your specific windows and province.

Can I get an exemption for medical reasons? This varies by province and by the specific medical circumstance, and isn’t something we can confirm on your behalf. If you believe you may qualify for a medical exemption, that’s a conversation with the relevant provincial transportation authority, not your installer.
